Ancora? Ho amato i Mogwai, ma non ho mai posto questo sentimento al di sopra di quel minimo di obiettività necessaria per stabilire se mi stessero vendendo merda o “robba” buona. Il post-rock è bello che è andato e su questo c’è poco da discutere. Gli ultimi due dischi, The Hawk Is Howling e Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will erano dotati di spunti interessanti, ma niente di rilevante, soprattutto al confronto con i pietroni miliari di Rock Action o Come On Die Young. Rave Tapes non colma il cielo di amore totale e non è la rinascita del genere in questione, ma è un disco solido e dall’immaginario variegato e ben gestito. L’umorismo (“Repelish”) va a braccetto con dense incursioni kraut (già da “Simon Ferocious”) e un mood che richiama i migliori episodi di Happy Songs For Happy People. Intento dichiarato, poi, ispirarsi alle colonne sonore dei film horror italiani “d’autore” di un bel po’ di tempo fa, e rispettato in pieno. Una ripartenza sorprendente.
