Conclusa l’esperienza Birdman Records, gli Howlin’ Rain passano su American e non si spostano granché dal sound mostrato sin dall’esordio. Ethan Miller e compagni sono alfieri del rock gonfiato a forza di psichedelia e chitarre dense, ai limiti del southern così come dello stoner, un po’ il campo in cui erano campioni i Queens Of The Stone Age di Songs For The Deaf. Tutto questo, però, è il problema di The Russian Wilds, dato che è granitico, siamo d’accordo, però mancano la varietà e quei guizzi che rendono particolare e speziato lo stile di band più o meno analoghe come gli Sleepy Sun. Quando poi è evidente il riciclo di determinati pattern da rock generalista (si vedono fantasmi dei peggiori Uriah Heep), diviene netta l’impressione che in studio la testa e il cuore fossero più orientati al “grande colpo” che a realizzare un buon disco.
