FREEZ, Icebreaker

Questo disco dei Freez, il secondo del trio vicentino, riporta indietro a una decina di anni fa, quando parte del panorama garage-rock statunitense era dominato da gente con magliette a righe, ciuffoni e barchette ai piedi: i tempi di Jonathan Pierce dei The Drums, dei Tijuana Panthers, di Male Bonding, NODZZZ, Crocodiles e Dum Dum Girls che apparivano su ogni blog di musica e sulle riviste cartacee. Anche in Italia avevamo di che vantarci, tra His Clancyness, Young Wrists, Karibean e via dicendo. L’operazione nostalgia innescata dai Freez è perciò un gioco di scatole cinesi che innesca almeno tre revival diversi: il bubblegum-pop anni Sessanta, il punk britannico anni Ottanta e il garage-rock anni Dieci di questo sventurato millennio. Qualcosa buca l’orecchio in modo più efficace (“April ’21”), e tra i tanti numeri di arioso garage-pop (“Chanel”) ventidue minuti finiscono in fretta, come quelle estati che credevamo di poter trattenere tra le mani.
